We joined SELF Magazine for #MoleCheckMonday to screen Conde Nast employees for skin cancer. It was a busy and hectic day once things got going and we enjoyed every second of it.

As skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US, with more than 3.5 million skin cancers in over 2 million people diagnosed each year, it’s more important than ever for everyone to get moles checked by board-certified dermatologists annually. Contrary to popular belief, people of all skin colors get skin cancer. By getting annual skin examinations, you’re increasing the chance of early skin cancer detection. All types of skin cancer has a high cure rate if it’s detected early and treated properly.

More than Melanoma: Squamous Cell Carcinoma Also Deadly

Research has shown that melanoma was the most deadly type of skin cancer. However, new studies show that another type of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma, is also deadly. MedPage Today reports:

Although most cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas are easily treated surgically, a small group of patients with specific disease risk factors develop metastases and ultimately die of the disease, a retrospective study determined.

Among a cohort of patients treated at a single academic center, 3.7% developed nodal metastases and in 2.1% the disease was fatal, according to Chrysalyne D. Schmults, MD, and colleagues from Harvard University.

From AAD: ”Melanoma Monday” Seeks To Increase Awareness Of Skin Cancer.

Healio (5/6) reports, “As part of its SPOT Skin Cancer campaign, the” American Academy of Dermatology “is designating the day as SPOT Orange on Melanoma Monday to heighten awareness of skin cancer and to motivate the public to detect early signs of the disease, according to a press release.” The group is urging the public to wear orange clothing. In the release, AAD President Dirk M. Elston, MD, FAAD, said, “The idea behind SPOT Orange is to paint the country orange one day of the year – Melanoma Monday – to show a unified front in fighting skin cancer.”

PolitickerNJ.com (5/6) points out that “according to the” AAD, “one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer which is the most common of cancer in the United States.”

The Cumberland (MD) Times-News (5/6) discusses the SPOT Orange campaign, and points out that the AAD “encourages everyone to protect their skin by applying sunscreen, seeking shade and wearing protective clothing.”

The Fairborn (OH) Daily Herald (5/6) reports, “Melanoma Monday also kicks off Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Since 1985, AAD members have conducted more than 2.1 million free skin cancer screenings.”
