Sunscreen helps prevent against the three most common types of skin cancer: Basal cell carcinoma, Squamous cell carcinoma and Melanoma. On top of that, it also helps protect against photo-aging, which are caused by UVA rays. Unlike UVB rays that are highest during the summer, UVA rays are the same level all year round, which is why it’s imperative to wear sunscreen even during cold winter months. The strongest evidence to date showing that sunscreen contains anti-aging benefits comes from a new Australian study published in Annals of Internal medicine, “Sunscreen and Prevention of Skin Aging: A Randomized Trial.”

Even with strong scientific evidence showing the importance of consistent sunscreen application and pictures of aged sun worshippers like Brigitte Bardot and Pamela Anderson with prominent sun damage, many young women are not using sunscreen. According to a study from Total Beauty Media Group, one in five women between ages 18 to 24 does not apply sunscreen regularly or understand the severity of melanoma.
