Five Tips to Balancing the Positive and Negative Effects of Coffee

There’s almost nothing better to wake us up every morning than a delicious cup of freshly brewed coffee. Since I’m an avid coffee fan, it’s with much regret that I inform you that coffee is acid-producing. In addition to acidifying the body, the 135 milligrams of caffeine in each 8-ounce cup of brewed coffee elevate circulating levels of epinephrine, which increases your overall stress level. That’s strike two. Now for strike three. Both caffeinated coffee and decaffeinated coffee increase the production of stomach acid as well as prevent the proper closure of the valve between the stomach and esophagus, leading to heartburn.

With the bad news, however, also comes some good. Coffee is one of nature’s laxatives, so it may help improve digestive health. Studies have also linked coffee consumption with a reduced incidence of gallstones, improved blood sugar levels, and a reduced risk of liver and colon cancer and of Parkinson’s disease. Why? Like other plant foods – and coffee does come from a plant – coffee is a rich source of antioxidant phytochemicals called polyphenols. Due to the low intakes of fruit and vegetables in this country, coffee is actually the number one source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet!

Here’s what I suggest you do to balance the good and the bad:

  • Hold yourself to about 200 milligrams of caffeine, the amount in two 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee or two shots of espresso. Research shows that this level of caffeine lifts mood and energy. Once you go above 200 milligrams, however, you’ll start to notice negative side effects such as jitteriness, anxiety, and stomach upset.
  • Consider choosing coffee made from the arabica bean, which has about half the amount of caffeine as the robusta bean, the other main variety.
  • Drink less coffee if you take birth control pills. It takes longer to metabolize caffeine when you’re on the pill.
  • To prevent withdrawal symptoms as you cut back, replace some of the coffee you drink with green tea, which is alkalinizing. Green tea also blocks the growth of harmful gut bacteria.
  • Get the acid out of your coffee. Drink only freshly brewed organic coffee made from freshly ground beans. Acids build up in ground coffee over time and especially in brewed coffee that has been sitting on a warming plate.
