Dancing is my fun activity, but it may not be yours. I’m not recommending that you start dancing to improve your skin health. I am recommending that you get in touch with what drives you, what invigorates you, what makes you want to jump out of bed in the morning. Regular doses of fun will bring your life to the next level, raising it from good to great. Your fun activity will fill you with joy and other positive emotions that generate a glow that can’t be replicated by any office procedure. Plus, smiling is the single best way to prevent frown lines!
A fun activity isn’t something you watch – it doesn’t consist of sitting in front of the television, attending a baseball game, or drinking cosmopolitans with your girlfriends. Your fun activity involves participation. You don’t watch. You do.
Your fun activity is also unique to you. Your fun activity may be someone else’s nightmare. Case in point: some of my patients love to run. They get up at 5:00 A.M. to run. They excitedly tell me about races, running routes, running times, and running partners. They gush about runner’s high. Well, that’s great – I’m happy for them. I’m glad they get their runner’s high. For me, running is anything but fun. Rather than runner’s high, I get runner’s low.
To come up with your fun activity, consider these questions:
What activity makes you uniquely you?
What makes you want to get out of bed in the morning?
What made you laugh as a child?
What do you consider fun?
Here I’ve created some ideas to help you get your thoughts flowing.
Creative expression. Painting, sculpting, drawing, even scrapbooking can count as your fun activity if you are the type of person who looks forward to expressing yourself creatively. Consider signing up for an art class. Or be less formal, but taking out some crayons, Magic Markers, or even Play-Doh. Think of how much fun you had as a child when you finger-painted, used watercolors, or sponge-painted. Try to rediscover that creativity and joy of expressing yourself in color and texture.
Connect with the earth. Some people feel exhilarated when they are outdoors. If the smells, sights, and sounds of nature get you out of get in the morning, then consider taking up hiking, gardening, or walking on the beach.
Move it. What type of movement makes you feel good? Belly dancing? Yoga? Tai chi? Strip aerobics? It feels tantalizing good to move the body in a way you don’t generally move day in and day out. Do0n’t automatically assume that movement can be fun only if you already know how to do it. When you must focus on coordinating and learning new movement patterns, you don’t have the mental space to think about what you need to finish at the office. So be daring. Try something new. You may find it exhilarating.
As long as you love it and look forward to it, any type of movement can count. As an added bonus, a move-it fun activity can double as your exercise and may even triple as your relaxation! If you take up yoga, you may even be able to quadruple-task, getting your deep breathing activity in as well.
Music. Your fun activity may center on musical expression, whether it’s singing or playing an instrument. If you are not musically trained, you might consider a drumming group. If you have small children, you might sign up for a Mommy and Me music class. Just make sure this is something that exhilarates you. It should not become just one more thing on your to-do list.
Play. Go to a playground and what do you see and hear? You probably don’t see too many frowns or hear too much crying or whining, and if you do, it doesn’t last for long. Indeed, children on a playground can teach you a great deal about having fun. If you’re a parent, play with your children. Go down the slides. Swing. Climb the jungle gym. Play king of the mountain. Build sandcastles. It will bring you closer to your children, make you the most fun parents on the block, reduce stress, and help you look forward to each day with your family.
The idea of your fun activity might not come to you today. It might take a few weeks before something surfaces. You also may need to go through a few trial runs. For example, you might pick hiking as a fun activity, try it a few times, and then realize that you dread it. Again, if your fun activity becomes a stressor rather than a stress reliever, you need a new fun activity!
Once you’ve defined what’s fun for you, schedule it in. put it in your calendar, datebook, or personal organizer. Even though this is something that defines you and brings you great joy, you need to plan for it. Otherwise, it just won’t happen. You’ll start each day thinking that you might have time for some fun, but you won’t make time. If you put it in your schedule, you’ll have fun.
Also consider doing your fun activity with at least one other person. If you like to dance, consider periodically going to a line-dancing night or taking a ballroom or swing class. If you enjoy music, consider joining a band or singing group. If you love to move, run or ride a bike with a buddy. Social connections heighten the joy of the experience and will keep you coming back for more.
